Tongue scraping is an ancient Ayruvedic practice. Ayruvedic medicine was developed more than 3000 years ago in India. It focuses on whole body healing and the balancing the mind, body, and spirit. Often the tongue can accumulate toxins, bacteria, food debris, fungi, and dead cells. Scraping the tongue can remove these harmful substances. Dental research has concluded that tongue scraping is more effective at removing toxins and bacteria from the tongue than traditional brushing and flossing.
Health Benefits of Tongue Scraping:
-Improves the ability to taste food which makes food more satisfying and may lead to adding less sugar, salt, and spice to food to make it taste good.
-Promotes general tooth and gum health, thus reducing the risk of plaque build up, tooth decay, loss of teeth, gum infections, and gum recession.
-Improves digestion by increasing the sense of taste and activated saliva production to help with digestion.
-Even when we sleep our digestive system is functioning and depositing toxins onto the surface of our tongue. If we don't scrape off these toxins they can be reabsorbed by the body. Therefore, scrapping can get rid of harmful toxins and boost the immune system.
What kind of tongue scraper to buy:
-Find one made of stainless steel. Stainless steel is less corrosive and can easily be sanitized.
-Buy one with a non-sharp and curved edge design.
How to scrape the tongue:
-Scrape the tongue from front to back 5-10 times.
-Rinse the scraper between scrapes if there is a lot of accumulation of "gunk". "Gunk" can appear clear, white, yellow, or green in color.
-Gently scrape so as to not stimulate a gag reflex.
-Perform on a daily basis in the morning.
